How to get your Georgia crash report

Three steps, in the order they actually happen. Georgia's Open Records Act limits crash reports to people involved in the collision and other authorized requesters, so have your case number and identification ready.

01

Find out which agency worked your crash

The agency listed on the driver-exchange slip or case card the officer handed you is the one holding your report. Inside city limits that is usually the Atlanta Police Department; on interstates overnight and on weekends, and on many highways outside the city, it is the Georgia State Patrol. Suburbs such as Decatur, Sandy Springs, Chamblee, Brookhaven, and East Point run their own records units. Keep the case or report number — every request starts there.

Where it lives on the form: header block — report number, filing date, agency of record.

02

Request the report from the right source

Most Georgia local agencies, including Atlanta PD, distribute crash reports electronically through LexisNexis BuyCrash, where you search by name, date, report number, or crash location and pay online. Reports written by the Georgia State Patrol come from the Department of Public Safety instead — through the DPS EPORTS open-records portal or the local State Patrol post. You can also pick up an Atlanta PD report in person at the Central Records Unit, 3493 Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy NW, weekdays during posted hours. Georgia law limits who may obtain a crash report, so be ready to show you were involved or are otherwise entitled to it.

Where it lives on the form: collision type, contributing factors, injury severity per unit.

03

Read it closely before anyone else uses it

Check the diagram, the direction of travel, the contributing-factor codes, the insurance information, and the injury severity marked for every occupant. Then save a copy for yourself. The adjuster on the other side will read the same document looking for reasons to pay less, so know what it says before they quote it back to you.

Where it lives on the form: insurer of record and whether a statement is already on file.

Why review your report with a lawyer before talking to insurance

The report is the insurer's starting point

Adjusters open your claim by reading the crash report and coding fault from it. A wrong factor code left uncorrected quietly becomes the version of events everyone argues from.

You are not required to give a recorded statement

You must notify your own insurer. You owe the other driver's carrier nothing before you have advice. Recorded statements are taken early precisely because injuries are not fully documented yet.

Injuries recorded as minor often are not

Soft-tissue injuries, concussions, and disc injuries frequently surface days later. A report noting "complaint of pain" or "none" gets used to cap value long after the medical picture has changed.

Deadlines are shorter than people expect

Two years for most Georgia injury claims — far less when a government vehicle or roadway entity is involved. Evidence like signal timing and camera footage disappears well before that.

SCHEDULE B — COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions we get every week

Most Georgia agencies need a few business days to review and upload a crash report — commonly three to five, and longer if the investigation is still open or the crash involved serious injuries. If your report is not searchable yet, wait a day or two and check again rather than assuming it was never filed.

Before you give a statement, spend ten minutes with a lawyer.

No fee to talk, and no fee unless we win. We will read your report with you and tell you plainly whether you need us.
